If you’re reading this article, chances are that you do! Believing in zodiac sign compatibility and knowing about the basics are two different things, though, so hopefully you’ve come to learn.
There are some great websites out there that talk more about compatibility for every sign, but here we’ll talk about sun sign compatibility only. Think of this as a crash course in the basics, and then go out there and learn more yourself!
Tip 1: Find Out Your Sign’s Element
A good rule of thumb in zodiac compatibility is like attracts like, unless we’re talking about sister signs (which we will—later!). Many people find great stability in dating within their sign’s element.
Calculating your zodiac sign is as easy as looking up your birthday and zodiac online, and once you know your sign, search for your sign’s element. If you already know your sign, you can find your element and elemental compatibility below!
Fire Signs: Leo, Aries, and Sagittarius are all compatible with each other. With your flaming passion and high energy, a fire sign couple is likely to get up to a lot of adventuring!
Many fire signs are quick to fall in love, but some become bored once the initial spark fades at the end of the honeymoon phase, so keep an eye out for flighty behavior. Once committed, fire signs are very loyal.
Water Signs: Scorpio, Pisces, and Cancer are compatible with each other. A bond between two water signs will be emotional, and can be quite intense and deep as well as romantic.
Some water sign couples can become oversensitive toward one another, so clear communication is a strong need for them. Sometimes giving each other emotional space or being sure to validate each other’s feelings can smooth over what could turn into conflict.
Earth Signs: Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo are all compatible together. Stable earth signs will find solace in a fellow anchor to make them feel safe and secure.
Watch out for a shared stubbornness and a need to do things “your way,” which can make it easy to pick a fight with your partner. Being able to compromise with your earth partner is very important.
Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are compatible signs in a relationship. Often quick, creative, and interesting, many air signs will love the light and fun dynamic they create in a partnership.
Like the wind itself, some air signs come and go, having trouble with commitment once the relationship delves into more serious emotional topics. Make sure you’re both committed to the same level.
Tip 2: Find Your Sister Sign
Picture the zodiac wheel. Wherever your sun sign sits on that wheel, the sign directly opposite of yours is your sister sign. Many people have found themselves dating either their direct sister sign, or their sister element, which is just the name for the element your sister sign is in.
Aries & Libra: The sister sign of Aries is Libra. The dynamic between these two can be passionate and intelligent, with Aries’ flame balanced by Libra.
They can be motivated by self-interest over partnership at times, which can cause unbalance in the relationship. Libra can become exhausted by headstrong Aries, so watch for friction in personality between these two. Aries may have luck dating the other air signs Gemini and Aquarius as well. Libra has luck with dating the other two fire signs, Sagittarius and Leo.
Taurus & Scorpio: The sister sign of Taurus is Scorpio. This pairing is marked by intense emotional commitment and a feeling of soul-level closeness.
However, they’re equally stubborn and rarely back down from a fight! Scorpio may also be frustrated by Taurus’ focus on the physical world rather than the emotional. Taurus might also like to date the other water signs Cancer and Pisces. Scorpio is compatible with the other earth signs, Capricorn and Virgo.
Gemini & Sagittarius: The sister sign of Gemini is Sagittarius. These two are the social powerhouse of sister sign pairings, which is a blessing as much as it is a curse.
They can have a fun, easy dynamic, but tend to sweep important matters under the rug in favor of having more fun. Sagittarius likes to travel far more than Gemini, which could be a source of strife. Gemini has a good amount of compatibility with Aries and Leo too, and Sagittarius may find a partner in the other air signs, Libra and Aquarius.
Leo & Aquarius: The sister sign of Leo is Aquarius. Boisterous, dramatic Leo and dreamy, demure Aquarius can be a classic case of “opposites attract.” They can both be stubborn in the way Taurus and Scorpio are, but with an even bigger tendency toward drama.
Aquarius can feel overwhelmed by Leo, so ensure there’s proper balance of give and take in this relationship. Leo matches well with the other air signs, Libra and Gemini. Aquarius gets along well with Aries and Sagittarius too.
Cancer & Capricorn: The sister sign of Cancer is Capricorn. Another classic instance of opposites attracting; it’s difficult to find two more intrinsically different people than an emotional intuitive Cancer and a hard-headed, logical Capricorn.
Other placements of theirs may moderate the stark divide and make them highly compatible, even with such different worldviews. Cancer has romantic luck with Taurus and Virgo too, while Capricorn might want to find a water sign partner in Scorpio or Pisces somewhere down the line.
Virgo & Pisces: The sister sign of Virgo is Pisces. Imaginative Pisces can whisk Virgo away into a new world of fantasy and creativity, while Virgo keeps the docile Pisces from losing their head in the clouds completely.
The two operate very differently, but bring each other a fresh new perspective. Virgo may like to have Scorpio or Cancer as a partner, and Pisces could be interested in the other earth signs, Taurus and Capricorn.
